Counter-Intentions can be the block to you achieving success. Ever wonder why that’s true? I mean, you’ve worked hard, clearly defining your intentions around what you want to accomplish and what the tasks are to do just that.
If you’re anything like me, sometimes the tasks fall far short of your intended result or worse yet, you never start. Trust me, I know the routine…I’ve been guilty of this myself.
So, the $64,000 question is – Why? What’s holding us back from success? That’s what we’ll talk about today.
While your intentions are clearly outlined or stated, what’s critical to be aware of is what comes up in your mind when you think of or say those intentions.
Enter Counter-Intentions! That’s most probably what’s happening. So, what’s a counter-intention? A Counter-Intention is whatever comes up mentally that’s so powerful, it holds you back.
Here’s an example:
Say these intentions out loud:
- I want to make $10,000 a month
- I want to be financially free and have time freedom
- I want to be a multi-millionaire
Okay what came to mind?
How about “Oh, you can’t make that kind of money” OR “That’s impossible for me” OR
“I don’t know how to do it”!
And that, my friends, is your unconscious mind speaking loud and clear to your conscious mind. How does that manifest itself? Simple – you do nothing, have an excuse for everything that didn’t or doesn’t happen, or better yet, you do Nothing!
Like I said earlier, I have suffered from this “disease” myself.
So, what do you do about it? It’s simple – Recognize that those thoughts are coming from your unconscious mind and get to the task at hand. Is it really that simple? Yes, it is. But please don’t mistake simple and easy as one in the same. Recognizing a counter-intention is one thing, changing the behavior is quite another thing.
The GOOD NEWS is that it can be changed but it will take discipline and constant awareness.
Accountability partners are a great way to help as are stating very intentional statements such as:
“I am happy and grateful that I’m becoming a better leader”
Or “I’m happy and grateful I’ve found another way to make a lot of money”. By putting affirming thoughts into your unconscious mind every time something counter pops into your head, things will begin to change over a period of time.
In so doing, turning counter-intentions into intentional actions will produce good things popping up in your life!
